You can register domain names up to 67 characters in length, including the ".com" or ".net" or ".org" extensions. Allowing domain names up to 67 characters has completely expanded the opportunity to register domain names that would not have been available otherwise. There are thousands of domains sold every day, some for tens of thousands of dollars, to corporations that want the domain you own. You also want to protect your business and product names. Since 1993, Network Solutions has registered more than 3.4 million domain names -- all limited to 26 characters. Now that their exclusive government contract has ended, competitors have tossed this artificial limit and are allowing longer names.
In our opinion, the realistic maximum number of characters is a balance between what people can remember and the realistic keyword phrases that might be used when searching for your service or product. Generally speaking, 30 to 40 characters are a lot. More than 50 characters is probably too many in most cases when you consider what most people can remember and/or search for you under. Any domain name approaching 60 characters is a mouthful and 60 or more is definitely too many. More than 60 is clearly a case of "just because you can doesn't mean you should".
Domain names must start with a letter, end with a letter or digit, and have as interior characters only letters, digits, and hyphen. There are also some restrictions on the length. Labels must be 63 characters or less. While upper and lower case letters are allowed in domain names, no significance is attached to the case. That is, two names with the same spelling but different case are to be treated as if identical.
